Removal of Front Sight
«

I want to remove the front sight on my M4 Ops. Looks like there are two roll pins to push out but it also looks like they go through the barrel. Has anyone remove this sight? Does it leave two cosmetic holes?

It leaves butt ugly holes. But that is not the barrel, it is just a shroud that the actual barrel fits inside of. I mixed up some agraglass and filled the holes, sanded to match the
barrel's
barrel shroud's contour and dura coated it. If you are not familiar with it, agraglass can be had from Brownells, and is an epoxy type material that won't dry up, crack or fallout.
Good luck!

Hmmm... filling, sanding and finishing sounds like too many things I can screw up. Do you know if anyone makes a flip down sight that fits the same hole pattern?

All I've seen go on a rail.

Umarex makes a fold-down sight that pins the same way. I think the best solution is to get the $20 clamp-on gas-block/quad-rail and the rail-mounted sight (also about $20, I think). This arrangement covers the ugly holes, and gives you the option to use a multitude of sights, bipods, lasers, etc. Most come on and off with just a thumbscrew. Also, it has a place for the original sling swivel. I believe acompany called UTG makes this stuff.

$95.50 for the Umarex flip up is a little rich for my blood. Think I'll try the UTG rail/sight combo. Thanks guys.

Cheaper than Dirt has the Umarex front flip sight for $43.90, if you're interested.

That's a different sight than they have on the Umarex website. I'm really just trying to get the sight out of view of my red dot so whatever works, looks half decent, doesn't leave behind messy holes and doesn't break the bank wins. The CTD sight should do the trick.

The Leapers red/green dot scope has a built-in base that clears the front sight, $69.95 at Amazon.com.

I use the Walther PS55 sight on my Colt/Umarex. Like the Leapers it uses the battery compartment as a riser to clear the front sight post and it works well. It's the sight Colt uses in their ad campaign photos.

It was all worry for nothing as I replaced the Walther PS-55 with an NcStar 4x32 Tactical and the sight is now cleared. Love it when a plan comes together.

I use an NcStar 4X32 "tactical" scope as well, but in some cases I could still see an annoying "shadow" of the front sight. Sight had to go. Now I still can stick it on there when I use carry handle and open sights. Takes about 20 seconds for the switch.
